New Year Revelers Told to Wrap Up Warm with Wintry Weather Predicted Across the UK
Forecasters have indicated a frosty start to the new year, with wintry precipitation expected throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants are being urged to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Festive Plans Proceed In Spite of Warnings
Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay festivities are expected to take place, following last year's calling-off. This is in spite of advisories for snow in northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be essential," said the national forecaster.
Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Readings are due to be chilly, making extra layers vital, said forecasters.
In more northern areas, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Widespread Weather Alerts for New Year's Day
Moving into Friday, snow alerts are in place across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.
- Commuting is expected to be disrupted.
- People have been urged to allow extra time for journeys on the road.
- Hold-ups and call-offs are anticipated on the transport network.
Readings Forecast to Fall Further
With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Medical Warnings Activated
In addition, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Officials stated this indicated the weather could to lead to notable consequences across the NHS and care systems. This includes a expected uptick in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.
