England's Assistant Coach Shares His Vision: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.
In the past, Anthony Barry featured for Accrington Stanley. Today, he is focused to assist the head coach claim the World Cup trophy in 2026. His journey from athlete to trainer started as an unpaid coach with the youth team. He recalls, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and it captivated him. He realized his purpose.
Metoric Climb
His advancement is incredible. Starting with his first major job, he developed a reputation for innovative drills and excellent people skills. His roles at clubs included elite sides, plus he took on roles with national teams across multiple countries. He has worked with big names such as top footballers. Now, with England, he's fully immersed, the “pinnacle” according to him.
“Dreams are the starting point … Yet I'm convinced that passion overcomes challenges. You dream big and then you plan: ‘How do we do it, each day, each phase?’ Our goal is the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. We must create a methodical process enabling us for optimal success.”
Focus on Minutiae
Dedication, focusing on tiny aspects, defines Barry’s story. Putting in long hours all the time, the coaching duo challenge limits. The approach involve mental assessments, a strategy for high temperatures for the finals abroad, and creating a unified squad. He stresses “Team England” and rejects terms like “international break”.
“It's not time off or a break,” Barry notes. “We needed to create an environment where players are eager to join and they're pushed that returning to club duty feels easier.”
Ambitious Trainers
Barry describes himself along with the manager as highly ambitious. “We aim to control every aspect of the game,” he states. “We seek to command the entire field and we dedicate most of our time to. We must not only to stay ahead with developments and to lead and create our own ones. It's an ongoing effort focused on finding solutions. And it’s to make the complex clear.
“We get 50 days with the players before the World Cup finals. We must implement a complex game that gives us a tactical advantage and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from concept to details to understanding to action.
“To create a system for effective use during the limited time, we must utilize all the time available from when we started. In the time we don’t have the players, we need to foster connections with each player. It's essential to invest time in calls with players, we have to see them in stadiums, understand them, connect with them. Relying only on those 50 days, it's impossible.”
Upcoming Matches
He is getting ready ahead of the concluding matches of World Cup qualifiers – against Serbia at Wembley and Albania in Tirana. The team has secured qualification by winning all six games and six clean sheets. Yet, no let-up is planned; instead. This is the time to reinforce the team’s identity, to gain more impetus.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the football philosophy should represent the best aspects about the Premier League,” Barry says. “The physicality, the adaptability, the strength, the work ethic. The England jersey should be harder than ever to get but light to wear. It must resemble a cloak and not body armour.
“To ensure it's effortless, it's crucial to offer a style that allows them to operate like they do every week, that resonates with them and lets them release restrictions. They should overthink less and more in doing.
“You can gain psychological edges you can get as a coach at both ends of the pitch – starting moves deep, closing down early. Yet, in the central zone on the field, that section, we feel the game has become stuck, notably in domestic leagues. All teams are well-prepared currently. They understand tactics – structured defenses. We are focusing to focus on accelerating the game through midfield.”
Passion for Progress
His desire for improvement knows no bounds. While training for the top coaching badge, he was worried over the speaking requirement, since his group contained luminaries including former players. To enhance his abilities, he entered tough situations he could find to practise giving them. Including a prison in Liverpool, where he coached prisoners for a training session.
He earned his license in 2020 at the top of the class, with his thesis – about dead-ball situations, for which he analysed 16,154 throw-ins – was published. Lampard included impressed and he hired Barry to his team with the Blues. After Lampard's dismissal, it said plenty that Chelsea removed most of his staff except Barry.
Lampard’s successor with the club became Tuchel, and, four months later, he and Barry won the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, Barry stayed on in the setup. Once Tuchel resurfaced at Munich, he brought Barry over away from London to rejoin him. The Football Association view them as a partnership similar to Southgate and Holland.
